Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her mother was her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while studying secondary education. She planned to become an high school English teacher. The dream however was cut short when after three years of study and being a teachers aide she dropped out of college. A poet by trade She began to sing in poetry performances live. She later teamed along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. Then, during Roots performance she came out as an artist. Afterwards she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to gain experience in the performing arts during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was hired by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
